2019 Highlights:

Ethylene Middle East Technology Conference & Exhibition and
The Middle East Fine & Specialty Chemicals Conference & Exhibition

The Ethylene Middle East Technology Conference, the only conference and exhibition of its kind in the region, was held under the patronage of His Excellency Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil, Kingdom of Bahrain and took place at the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre, on the 13th & 14th of February 2019 alongside the Middle East Fine & Specialty Conference & Exhibition (ME-SPEC).

The events were executed under the leadership of Metab Al-Shammari, General Manager - Olefins, Petrochemicals SBU, SABIC and opened the opportunities for networking across the streams of operators and owners as well as product and service providers to meet and understand the constantly evolving trends, technologies, products and solutions to the challenges faced by the industry.

Industry leaders led the discussion on “Enhancing Competitiveness through Energy Efficiency, Cost Effectiveness, Asset Reliability and Human Capital”.
The show featured global presentations on Enhancing Asset Performance (People, Infrastructure and Investments); Managing Changing Feedstock (Mixed-Feed, Alternative feed, Sustainable feed); Advantage of Digitalization and Big Data; and Relevancy with Integration and Industry Consolidation.

Dr. Abdulwahab Al Sadoun Secretary General from GPCA focused on “ Turning Waste into Value – The GCC Journey towards the foreground” for his keynote address.

Steven McCoskey- Vice President, Operations, Solomon Associates presented “Middle East Olefins: Competitiveness Under Pressure”.

Frederik Hoornaert - Director, Olefins & Aromatics, SABIC, discussed “Ethylene Production in Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia: Current Status, Outlook and Courses of Action”.

Strategic Sessions

Strategic Sessions at ME-SPEC 2019

Strategic Sessions were held on various topics. Fuad Mosa Vice President - Local Content & Business Development Unit , SABIC spoke about “Future of Specialty Chemicals in the region”. Sultan Mofti, Deputy Governor, SAGIA - Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority focussed on KSA’s commitment to transform its economy. He mentioned that Vision 2030 will be realized through the implementation of 13 nation-wide programs ranging from the “Financial Sector Development Program to the Quality of Life Program”. Khalil Ibn Salamah Managing Director, Global Company for Downstream Industries (GDI) concluded the session with a talk on the meaning of Specialty Downstream and how to approach it.

Highlights from EMET 2019 and ME-SPEC 2019

The edition welcomed 938 unique participants from 344 companies. The event provided a platform for networking across the streams of operators and owners as well as product and service providers.

Master Class on Process Safety

The workshop organized by AIChE (American Institute for Chemical Engineers) highlighted various aspects of process safety at the ethylene plants and aimed to bridge gaps in the knowledge of operators and engineers. Led by Jack MacCavit, it offered an introduction to CCPS’ Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS) approach, including the four pillars and twenty elements that define the structure for the RBPS approach.

Special Session with the Students

Students from the University of Bahrain and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals attended the event and had a special session with Motaz Abdulaal, Director Project Management from Dussur. The presentation was about the versatility that petrochemical offers, and why petrochemical products are the material of choice of thousands of applications.
